Board Compensation
Under Federal law, foundations and non-profit
organizations are allowed to offer “reasonable”
compensation to Board members. Approximately 25% of
all foundations compensate their trustees based upon
some combination of set fee and/or reimbursement per
board meeting or committee meeting.
The concept of “reasonable compensation”
is often determined by industry-wide comparisons that
review whether those in similar positions are equally
compensated for similar services. All board compensation
must be reported to the IRS under form 990 or 990-PF.
